KANCHEEPURAM DISTRICT PROFILE
• Kancheepuram district is bounded by Thiruvallur and Chennai districts in the North, Villuppuram district in the South, Bay of Bengal in the East and Tiruvannamalai and Vellore districts in the West.
•The District lies between 12º14'00”N to 13º02'00”N Latitude, 79º 31’30”E to 80º 15' 30”E Longitude and has an areal extent of 4307 sq.km
• There are 13 Blocks, 633 Villages and 4015 Habitations in the District
 Physiography and Drainage:
• The seasonal rivers like Araniyar & Korattalaiar and Thondiar drain in the northern and southern part of the district. The Palar, Araniyar & Korattalaiar and Thondiar river basins which are used for drinking and irrigation purpose.
• Kancheepuram district is classified into coastal areas and other plain lands with small intermittent hills.
• Few residual hills such as St.Thomas Mount, Thirukkalukundram hills and Vandalur hills are found in the district. The general elevation of the district ranges from 0.5m to 230m above MSL.
• River Palar is a major river course, which drains this district originates from Western Ghats in Karnataka State. Cheyyar and Vegavathi are the small tributaries of Palar river.

The Ground Water levels from the 47 number of observation wells of TWAD have been analysed for Post-Monsoon and Pre-Monsoon. Since 1991, average Ground water level in m Below Ground Level for pre and post monsoon is as follows:
 Sustainability::
With a view to enhance the Sustainability of the drinking water sources, recharge structures are being implemented by TWAD Board under various State and Central Government assistances.
