The Underground Sewerage Scheme for Mayiladuthurai Municipality has been administratively sanctioned for Rs.42.00 Crores in G.O.Ms.No.727/MA&WS/ dt.30-12-2000. The detailed project report is approved for Rs.39.63 Crores with the following cost sharing pattern in Lr.No.J-39020/18/2001-NRCD-11/dt.26.12.2001.

 GOI : Rs.18.87 Crores

 GOTN : Rs.14.15 Crores

 Local Body : Rs. 6.61 Crores

The total area of the town is 11.40 sq. km. The town is divided into 8 zones. The sewage generated from each zone is collected through a network of street sewers to a collection well. The sewage collected in each zone is pumped to the sewage treatment plant constructed at Arupathi Village of capacity 5.85 MLD (present requirement) adopting waste stabilization pond system. The treated effluent is let into the natural channel below the STP site and utilized for Agriculture.

The total length of sewer line is 87.34 KM with 3406 manholes. The total number of house service connections is 10800. The Local body has effected 6902 House Service Connections as on 31.12.2010

The Project was commenced on 13-3-2003. The scheme has been completed & commissioned on 31.12.2007 and it is under maintenance (for 5 years).

The DPR for the following additional works at a cost of Rs.298.48 lakhs was sanctioned by GOI vide NRCD Lr.No J-39020/18/2001-NRCD-11/03-10-07.

 Construction of Bridge across Sathiyavan channel.

 Supply, Delivery, Erection & Commissioning of Genset for 8 nos. of the Pumping station including construction of generator room

 Formation of approach road to STP site

 Construction of Retaining wall in pumping stations - 8, 8A, 2 and at Bridge approach.

The above works have been divided in to 7 packages. For Packages 1 to 6: Work order issued on 17.9.10 and the work is in progress

For Package 7, for the construction of Bridge across Sathiyavan channel, work order has been issued on 17.2.010 and work is in progress.

Out of Rs. 41.00 Crores received from the above funding agencies an expenditure of Rs. 41.82 Crores incurred as on 31-12-2010.

The population benefited is 84290.
